Privacy Policy
1. What this tool is
The Commute Cost Comparator is a free tool from Julius that estimates and compares the cost of two driving routes. There's no account, no sign-up, and no login — you use it anonymously.
2. What we collect, and why
- Your vehicle. The year, make, model, and configuration you select (or a manually entered MPG figure) is sent to FuelEconomy.gov, a public U.S. government service, to look up fuel economy — no account or key is needed on their end either.
- Your route stops. The addresses/labels you enter or select are sent to Google Maps Platform to compute driving distance, time, and toll estimates. This is subject to Google's own privacy policy.
- Your email address — only if you request the full report. If you choose to email yourself the detailed report, we send your address and the report to Resend, our email delivery provider, solely to deliver that one email. We do not add you to a mailing list, and we don't keep a record of your email address after the report is sent.
- Anonymous usage analytics. We may record which steps of the tool you reach — for example, that a vehicle was selected, a route was calculated, or a report was requested — to understand whether the tool is useful. This never includes your address, vehicle details, or email address.
3. We don't have a database
This tool has no persistent storage for your addresses, vehicle, or results. Every calculation happens fresh, per request; results exist only in your browser tab until you close it. The one exception is a short-lived link (valid for 30 minutes) created only if you ask for the emailed report — it's a signed reference to the numbers already shown on your screen, used once to generate that email, and is never readable as a database record.
4. What the emailed report contains
If you request it, the report email contains the same aggregate numbers already shown on screen — distance, time, estimated fuel and toll cost, and the weekly/monthly/annual comparison. It does not list your individual stop addresses.
5. Third-party services this tool uses
- Google Maps Platform (Routes and Places) — route calculation and address lookup.
- FuelEconomy.gov (U.S. Department of Energy / EPA) — vehicle fuel economy data.
- Resend — delivers the emailed report, only when you request one.
- PostHog — anonymous product analytics, if enabled.
Each operates under its own privacy policy, linked above where applicable.
6. Cookies and local storage
This tool itself does not set tracking cookies. If analytics is enabled, PostHog may store a small amount of data in your browser to distinguish anonymous sessions, per its own policy.
7. Children's privacy
This tool is not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
8. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we'll update the effective date above. Continued use of the tool after a change means you accept the revised policy.
